Why Arizona Pools Turn Green (and How to Fix It Fast)
Green water is a chlorine problem, a circulation problem, or both — and Arizona heat makes it happen fast. What is going on and how to fix it.
A pool doesn't turn green because you did something dramatically wrong. It turns green because something small stopped keeping up — usually for less time than you'd think.
In the East Valley the margin is genuinely thin. The same pool that would drift for two weeks in a mild climate can go from clear to visibly green in three or four days in August. It's worth understanding why, because the fix is much easier when you catch it early, and the reasons it happened are the reasons it'll happen again.
Why does it happen so fast here?
Sunlight destroys chlorine. UV breaks down free chlorine continuously, and in Arizona there's a lot of UV for a lot of the year. When kept at appropriate levels, stabilizer (cyanuric acid) slows that down — it's essentially sunscreen for your chlorine.
Heat speeds everything up. Warm water accelerates algae growth and increases the rate at which chlorine is consumed. A pool at 90°F has a meaningfully higher sanitizer demand than the same pool at 75°F, so the chlorine level that was effective in April is not effective in July.
Bather load spikes exactly when conditions are worst. More people swim when it's hot. Every swimmer adds organic material that consumes chlorine.
Circulation is doing more work than you realize. Chlorine only sanitizes water it actually reaches. If the pump isn't running long enough, if the filter is loaded, if a valve is set incorrectly, you can have decent chemistry on a test strip and still grow algae in the corners and on the walls.
Put those together and green water isn't a mystery. It's arithmetic.
What are the stages, and where am I on the scale?
Knowing where a pool is tells you what it needs.
- Slightly hazy, still blueChlorine is dipping, or the filter needs attention. Correct the chemistry and the run time and it usually resolves in a day or two.
- Dull green tint, walls slickAlgae has started. The slick feeling is the reliable early tell — you can generally feel it before you can clearly see it. This is the cheapest possible moment to act. Adding the proper chemicals and increasing pump run-times will resolve it.
- Solidly green, can't see the deep endAn established bloom. This needs a proper treatment cycle, not just a bottle of something.
- Dark green or swampAt this stage a drain and chlorine rinse is usually what's needed. Some may be recoverable without this step if acted upon quickly.
The reason to be honest about which one you're looking at is that the wrong-sized response wastes money in both directions. Shocking a hazy pool repeatedly won't fix a circulation problem, and a single bottle of algaecide won't touch a swamp.
Can I fix a green pool myself?
Often, yes — if you're realistic about what it involves and you're not at the swamp end. The order matters more than the products.
- Test first. Guessing is what makes this expensive. You need to know where chlorine, pH and stabilizer actually are before you add anything.
- Get the debris out. Anything organic on the bottom is going to keep eating your chlorine.
- Brush everything. Walls, steps, benches, behind the ladder. Algae holds onto surfaces and brushing exposes it so treatment can reach it. This is the step people skip and it's the step that matters most.
- Treat, and hold it. A single dose that fades by morning hasn't done the job. The pool needs sanitizer held at an elevated level until the algae is genuinely dead — that's usually more than one day.
- Filter, filter, filter. Dead algae has to physically leave the water. This is where most of the clearing actually happens, and it means running continuously.
- Clean the filter during the process, not just after. A filter that's clogged with dead algae stops working, and the pool stalls halfway back. On a bad recovery the filter may need cleaning more than once.
- Rebalance when it's clear. Then fix whatever caused it, or you'll be doing this again.
For what it's worth, here's how that timeline actually runs on our jobs. A typical green-to-clean can look crystal clear in two to four days. Then you wait for the chlorine to come back down before anyone swims, which usually puts it at day five or six. Clear and swimmable are not the same day, and it's worth knowing that before you plan a weekend around it.
How often the filter needs cleaning mid-recovery depends on how efficiently the water is being filtered, and on whether you have a sand, single-cartridge or multi-cartridge filter. Sand and single-cartridge filters may need more attention during the clean-up process.
Why isn't my pool clearing even though I shocked it?
This is the most common question, and it's nearly always one of four things.
- The chlorine didn't hold. One dose in a high-demand pool gets consumed within hours. If it tests at zero the next morning, the algae barely slowed down.
- The filter is loaded. Dead algae clogs a filter quickly. If pressure is up and flow is down, the pool has stopped clearing regardless of chemistry.
- Nobody brushed. Algae on surfaces is substantially protected from any chemicals in the water.
- Stabilizer is far out of range. Too little and the sun burns your chlorine off; too much and the chlorine you have becomes sluggish. Either way the test strip can look reasonable while the pool behaves badly. This is the one that catches people off-guard, because it's invisible without testing for it specifically.
There's also a fifth: it is clearing, and it's been thirty-six hours. Recovery isn't instant, and cloudy-grey is a normal stage on the way back — it means the algae is dead and now it's a filtration problem, which is progress.
Does the pool need to be drained?
Usually not, and be careful with anyone who leads with draining.
Most green pools in the Valley can be recovered chemically. Draining an in-ground pool here carries real risks — plaster that dries out in this sun can be damaged, and an empty shell has its own problems — so it isn't a casual step.
The exception is the swamp end of the scale above. Once a pool is that far gone, a drain and chlorine rinse is usually what it needs, and treating it as a chemistry problem just spends money slowly on the way to the same answer.
Where draining genuinely comes in is when the surface is the problem rather than the water: if algae has been sitting long enough it will become thick and stick to the plaster. That's when an acid wash or a chlorine wash is the honest answer, and both require draining. We cover both on our green-to-clean page.
Extremely high stabilizer is the other case where partial replacement of the water is the practical fix, because there's no chemical that removes it.
How do I stop it happening again?
Green water is a symptom. The underlying cause is almost always one of these, and they're all boring:
- Run time too short for the season. Summer needs more hours than winter. Same pool, different demand.
- Stabilizer never checked. It drifts, and nothing reminds you.
- Filter cleaned too rarely. It's out of sight, so it's out of mind until circulation is already poor.
- No alternative sanitation method. Nothing working on the water besides chlorine — no mineral-based algaecide, no maintenance dosing of enzymes to help break down organics.
- Nobody looking at it. Most green pools we're called to had a two- or three-week gap in them somewhere — a holiday, a house move, a busy stretch at work.
That last one is most of them, honestly. The pools that stay clear aren't the ones with the cleverest chemistry — they're the ones somebody looks at every week. That's the entire argument for weekly service, and it's a much better deal than paying for recoveries.
When should I just call someone?
Call if you can't see the bottom, if the water has been green for more than a few days, if you've treated it twice and it hasn't moved, or if you're heading into a weekend you actually wanted to enjoy.
And call quickly rather than eventually. In this heat the difference between a three-day-old green pool and a three-week-old one is significant — more chemical, more filtration, and a much higher chance the plaster has been stained, which turns a water problem into a surface problem.
